It's only about humanity

In the past few years, we have been witness to several natural and man-made disasters. Be it hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, or anything else. What stands out in these, is the indomitable human spirit. People come to the aid of other people, without worrying about personal safety, reward, or recognition.

There are stories upon stories which tell the tale or an ordinary person who became a hero for other people when the situation demanded.

She or he is probably just like you and me. Her/ his life before that day, was probably as ordinary as yours and mine. She or he has responsibilities, children, limitations, just like the rest of us. What happens that this seemingly ordinary person sees a situation and decides to do what she/he can to make it better?

I believe it is one’s inherent humanity.

It is this humanity that makes me believe in the inherent goodness of people. Give a person the space to be himself/herself. Trust a person to do his/her best under given circumstances. Take away insecurity. Take away fear. And then, watch this person surprise you, go way beyond expectation.

It’s not always about “what’s in it for me.” Most of the time, it’s only about “humanity.”
