ARCHITECTURE - DAY 47 - Throwback

Throwback Architecture.

I am always fascinated by design and especially architectural design, I am a qualified Architect even though I have not practiced in a million moon, but that does not mean that I still constantly find myself gravitating towards intriguing designs.

These are but a few examples of times when I could not resist taking a photograph of something that made me stop, even for just a second to admire something that I found aesthetically pleasing.

The Church is St Cyprians Cathedral in my home town Kimberley, in the Northern Cape, South Africa. This is the same city famous for the Big Hole, which is the largest man made hole in the world. The Mine was dug initially by hand and has since grown to something worth checking out. It also is constantly getting bigger and the sides of the hole crumble in and expands the size of the hole.

St Cyprians Cathedral was pretty much formalised on 1908, first becoming a Cathedral.

Churches in diggers' camps on the South African Diamond Fields met initially in tents in 1870–71. The first Anglican Church to be built was St Mary's in Barkly West. The nascent St Cyprian's congregation gathered later in a metal-roofed building, the Odd Fellows' Hall near the Market Square and, from 1880 to 1908, in Jones Street, in a prefabricated wood and iron building which had been imported from England.[3]

The first rector was Fr John Witherston Rickards, previously a curate at St Cyprian's, Marylebone, London. He was appointed by the Bishop of Bloemfontein, the Rt Revd Allan Webb, being diverted from Modderpoort to the Diamond Fields when he arrived in 1871.
