Food from a hedge
Eugenia is a wonderful evergreen shrub that is ideal for a hedging plant.
It is a very fast growing shrub with lovely dark green shiny leaves and bushes out quickly when clipped for a hedge.
The plant has flowers that resemble fluffy pompoms and eventually these turn into bright red glossy berries.
What most people do not know, is that these berries can also be eaten - either raw or cooked into a delicious jam.
A friend of mine harvests the berries for her jam and makes melt in your mouth jam tarts.
The berries are high in vitamin C - oh and your garden birds will also love them!
What a pretty pom-pom flower and interesting to learn you are able to eat the fruits as well, learning so much about different trees and berries being used for hedging and doubling up additional food in the garden.
Yes it is good to know these things in these days.
