The White Working Class

in #poverty8 years ago

I shouldn't post depressing articles this late but I couldn't help myself. The Atlantic published an insightful piece about the isolation and hopelessness of many white Americans. Growing up as a child of immigrants in diverse, urban areas, "poverty" for me was colored. It was the "brown" aunt who sacrificed sewed 10+ hours per day at home and got paid less than a dollar per piece. It was the "yellow" neighbor who bought groceries on welfare. This article and others like it challenge my biases. They highlight the suffering of a voiceless minority. The best article I've read this year on white poverty and its link to the rise of Drumpf was from The American Conservative.
