Poverty right now is the major reason we cannot call ourselves civilized as a species. Maybe even as close as 20 years ago, poverty had some practical reasons for existing. But, at present, the only reason is structural. We have a model of governance that was built for the past, not the future. The technological know-how we have today could eradicate poverty in less than a year, and on a planetary level, but technology is still mainly used for profit.

And you are correct in saying that we need to get involved, things will not progress if do not progress with them and push forward. And there are a number of ways this will be done, but the one I find most promising is the decentralized approach.

There is a foundation called X Prize, that searches for real-world problems that impact billions of people. And after they define a clear solution and offer a reward for the team that comes with the technology that meets all the standards defined.
