Potty Training - What Not to Do
These are the things you shouldn’t do while potty training your child:
1. Don't make a fight of it. If your kid is hesitant to sit on the potty, tell them calmly that it is time to use the potty and remind them of the rewards they could get if they use the potty.
2. Do not let your toddler get away with using the potty. They might cry or scream. Tell them that they are a ‘big boy’ or ‘big girl’ now and they’re supposed to use the potty.
3. Do not punish or shame your little one when they have accidents. Accidents are part of potty training.
4. Do not expect your child to train fast. Some kids potty train in a few days, while others might take a few weeks or a few months.
5. Do not use diapers once you start potty training. Doing so will confuse your child.
6. Do not start nighttime potty training before your toddler is fully trained to use the potty during day time. It’s ok to use pull ups during night.
7. Do not pressurise your little one - stop the training if they are not ready for it and try again after a few weeks.
8. Do not start potty training at a time of stress (e.g. moving house, divorce, etc.).
