Fierce. Face.

Not the camera, nor the lens or any other gear is going to help you while taking portraits. All that matters is the connection with the model in order to get some great results. When a trust bond is established and the model dares to open up to you 100%, then the magic happens.

Look at this shoot I had with the great Cecilia. We had about an hour before shooting in order to get to know each other a bit. Only after she told me a decent bit about herself, I could get to work. I never take a shot before getting to know the model 📷💕

The dark atmosphere I captured in this shot took some time to establish. Cecilia was actually laughing all the time, but I had to take the shot where she looked more like the stories she told me. They were quite dark indeed. Being a model is not only fun stuff. Let me leave it at that. 💪

A white background was chosen to lighten up the complete post a bit, The above image brings in some light which the first picture lacks.
After our 30 minutes of shooting, I am quite happy with the results. I once again got the feeling I got to have an insight into a great person head. For that I am grateful🙏

Both shots above are shot with a Canon fd 50mm @1.4 on my Sony A7II

impressive discrete beauty in this outstanding portrait dear friend. love it . So nice work!

He there artizm!

You are always leaving the most kind comments :)

Thanks for that, do you also like the first picture to be just a bit out of focus?

t.

I'm not @artizm, but maybe I can answer too ;-)
Yep, some front focus, seems that focus is set to hair.
And when it would probably be an instant "mark for delete" during beauty shot, it completely doesn't matter in this picture.
I like it a lot, and don't care about technical details :D

You sure can answer that for her

It is what my exact thoughts were too! I kept it because I felt it didnt matter that much

Also, I only shoot manual focus lenses, so it would be a real game changer if I had to delete everyone that was not in focus. xD

t.

99% true ;-)
But I don't agree completely. For sure, the real portraiture happens between two human beings, and when there is a lack of connection, even thousands of dollars in photo gear will not help.
I left this 1% because when you have this connection, gear may affect the visual side of the picture dramatically. Perspective, depth of field, sometimes even colors and tonality are affected by some soulless items you hold in your hands ;-)

it's 100% true what you are saying, I am also shooting with a fullframe A7II with a decent lens @1.4

But I think people do obsess way to much about gear. Always wanting to have the newest next best thing, once just simply does not need it.

Talk and talk, that helps the most in portrait photography if you ask me! I also own +/- 200 lenses, all vintage, old and cheap, and hell that 1% influences things a ton.

Thanks for your great comment @adamdo

t.

That's why I left most of photography groups, and asked all my friends to not ask me any gear-related questions.
People spend so much time trying to find new camera body with extra 10Mpix & faster AF than they don't have anything left to go out and shoot.

@adamdo that exactly. I can work with your brain, you got a follow my friend.

I love the shots, the models, background. I could see a lot of emotions shows you had a strong connection. You really know you job I must say.. Lovely photo Story in all..

Super thoughtful of you to leave that kind comment promize123!

t.

Love her expression !!! Great work!

Yeah it took some time to make her look exactly like I wanted her to look.

As a headshot and portrait photographer, I totally agree. It all comes down to the look in the eye, the subtlest yet most powerful indicator of the persona. Without previous connection and interaction is almost like the eyes are lost with no meaning, even if they’re looking down the lens!
Great post, and beautiful portraiture @thi-js

Amazing photography, especially the first one. Model revelation, I like freckles especially. A very climatic photo. What lens did you take this photograph with?

xcellent capture, the 1st one!
