Portrait Contest - Creative Lighting "Emotions"

in #portraitcontest6 years ago

This image is one of the most challenging I've ever created. Have a look at it first and try to guess how it was accomplished.
No Photoshop, no double or triple exposures. Just one click of the shutter.

Here's how it was done:

The camera was mounted on a tripod and it was a long exposure (20 seconds) at f13. I started with the camera framing the subject on the left edge of the frame. Then in complete darkness clicked open the shutter and left it open, walked to the right of the subject and fired a flash with a colored gel. walked back to the camera and framed the subject in middle then walked to the right of the subject again changed the gel and fired a second time. I repeated that once more after moving the camera again for the third shot. Each shot I asked the model for different emotions. The result is straight out of the camera!

wow its amazing shoot, but if you took 20s without multiple exposure why not shake anymore when the model change for different emotions.

Good question. The reason is - because the room was in total darkness so no movement at all was picked up. Not even me crossing in front of the lens. Only when the flashes went off for a brief moment (approx 1/8000 sec) did it freeze and capture what was exposed.

Great contest. Would try to participate @njphotog.
