Next time use a ring light - people are suckers for multiple light reflections in the eyes. I personally think it's a cheap trick, though :D

Those can be effective for sure. I don't have one, so my set-up for shots like this is with two strobes, one below and one above the subject, using the fall off and ambient for getting the white wall effect.
Do what most professional photographers do - buy something cheap (like an led strip) and put it close to your subject. Just be sure the light is around 4,000-5000K or it may create white balance problems (certainly not considerable, since you are using two flashes).

Probably one of the other comedians' jokes. It was a group session for promotion of their group and comedy club ROR Comedy where I am headed right now!
