My views are a bit contrary to your opinion.
I think land (in your language, a piece of soil) is totally worth fighting for, dying for, because it's the only thing that lasts!
We come and go, but the land is always here. And the people who love it and understand it are the people who own it.
Not convinced.
Many things last but we don't find for them. Someone bought your favorite football club, would you kill him?
