Andrew Jackson - A hero or villain?
Some Background
Andrew Jackson was the 7th president of the United States. His campaign strategy can be compared to Donald Trump's - always in favor of the common man. He has many similarities with Trump. So, the question must be asked: Is Andrew Jackson a hero or a villain to society?
Jackson was a pioneer for future presidential campaigns
Jackson was seen as the common man. His campaign strategy was the first of its kind, which is still being used to this day. Jackson saw many policies with the same view of a typical American citizen at that time. Due to this, he received the popular vote among the people of America in both 1824 and 1828. There was outrage when he didn't become president in 1824.
Jackson - The Common Man
Jackson and the National Bank
Jackson seemed to have a good legacy, being a war hero in all, however, he did not favor the National Bank. His opinion on the National Bank was widely disputed for and against between both civilians and congressmen. Some viewed the bank as a terrible monster, but others viewed the bank as critical infrastructure to their corporations.
Andrew Jackson and the National Bank did not get along.
This situation could seem heroic to some, or evil to others.
Jackson and the Trail of Tears
Jackson took pride in the American Farming industry. He took so much pride in this career, that he decided to forcefully migrate the native people to reserves that were not in the way of our expansion. (Event was called The Trail of Tears)
This is another situation that can be seen both ways. It was great for America's farming industry, however, we were taking the indians' land forcefully.
Conclusion
In my opinion, Andrew Jackson was not a villain. He was a hero. Not only was he a war hero, but he did what he thought was best for our country. I may not agree with every decision he made, but he did it for the country, and in favor of the country. My opinion would be different if I suspected that the decisions he made were for his personal benefit.
There are many more factors to the Jackson Presidency, however, I only chose a few of the most prominent events of his time.
Great post. It really makes you think hero or villain is right. I go back and forth I don't know xd.
Haha, me as well. Politics these days have been more interesting (in a bad way) than ever. I'm trying to understand the past, so I'm able to better-understand the present.
