Medicare For All, In America, Will Cost Americans Less Than Private Health Insurance

in #politics6 years ago

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) thanked the conservative mega-donors Charles and David Koch on Tuesday for "accidentally making the case for Medicare for All" in a new analysis on the cost of such a single-payer health-care plan. Sanders made the comments in a video he posted to Twitter in response to a study published by Charles Blahous at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University — a center subsidized by the Kochs.

My thoughts on this news

A study funded by the Koch Brothers accidentally proved that Medicare for All program that Bernie Sanders is always promoting will cost Americans less than our current private health insurance system. The Republicans are always screaming and yelling on how there is no way we would be able to afford a single payer system but what they fail to show is that our current system is actually more expensive. The overhead cost of private health insurance is about 20% while our current Medicare system is about 2%. In the long run Americans would pay more in taxes but they would no longer have to pay for private health insurance so their healthcare costs would go down. Not only that, every single American in the country would have healthcare coverage. This is not some crazy socialist idea, this is something many other countries in the world do today!

I’d rather pay more and get private care. The VA and NHS are a disaster. Why would we want to go that route?

Private health care or private health insurance...? Whether healthcare is private or government, does not matter because a single payer government health insurance program will pay for either one. So I really don't care if the VA is shutdown or converted to private ownership after a single payer healthcare system is made available to every American.

Pretty much all healthcare in the USA is private, but they are either paid for with private health insurance or medicare/medicaid which is government health insurance. If you want to keep paying for private health insurance that is certainly your choice you are free to do so, I am not saying private health insurance corporations need to go away... I believe in freedom of choice.

I prefer a single payer system that is funded by taxes (just like medicare/medicaid) for all Americans because it will provide healthcare for every American, even those Americans who are too poor to afford healthcare. So Americans would pay more in taxes, but the increase in taxes would still cost less than Americans have to pay private health insurance corporations in monthly fees and copayments. The article I linked in this post proves that mathematically. Not only that, you can look at any country in Europe that uses a single payer healthcare system and you can see they spend less money on healthcare than the USA does and they provide healthcare to all their citizens.

Just a reminder that 45,000 people die every year for preventable reasons because of the garbage healthcare system we have.
