Some Resources for Studying Propaganda

in #politics7 years ago

I was skimming The_Donald over at Reddit, and I ran across this post:
/pol/ explains the insidious brainwashing & propaganda we are up against.

I have been collecting material on the use of propaganda for a while; the concept of information warfare is based on the concept of propaganda, and while I haven't shifted my own focus of study that way, I would like to share with you what I have so far.

We are in the midst of an information war at the moment
See my earlier post - Who is telling you what - propaganda, conspiracy, and critical thinking

If you want to have even the smallest chance of understanding who is doing what in this war, you need to know what the basic methods are.

I will also be sharing research I have collected on these related and/or overlapping concepts in the future:

  • Soviet Active Measures/Disinfomatzya
  • COINTELPRO propaganda (a smaller subset of the ops in the whole, most which were directed at individuals)
  • New Left adaptions of Active Measures (Alinsky)
  • PsyOps/MindWar/Pychological Warfare

Before we dig into the list, I'll share a nice high energy song which applies to the subject at hand.

You will note that I am not including any Churchill, Chomspsky, or Zinn. I should because they are excellent examples of the use of using propaganda in the discussion of propaganda. YMMV.

If you are interest in obtaining a copy of any of these, let me know! Some of thee titles are duplicates, btw: the maintenance and update of my reference library is a neverending battle for me

The Propaganda Model and Sociology: Understanding the Media and Society. (n.d.)."

That's Chomsky.

I'll add this to my references, thank you!

FYI, upvoting posts older than a week will not earn you any curation rewards...in fact, you really want to upvote posts that are 6 days old or younger. Feel free to remove any votes you have cast on my archived stuff; I won't be angry ;>

I pass on Chompsky's work, though. I deconstruct his stuff in context of his anti-American views ;>

Glad you like it..I'm out of focus today, and this was a "throw something against the wall and see what sticks" post

I really need t dig into these sources, but I'm rereading Parliament of Whores now

For those of us who are old enough to remember the Cold War, Golitsyn's New Lies for Old is a fascinating look into Cold War era Soviet disinformation programs. I reviewed it here.

I added you on GoodReads; all Steves are geniuses lol

Thanks. Added you back. The only thing I don't like about GoodReads is that my to-read list gets longer so much faster than my completed list. ; -)

exactly! the same thing happens the my reference library, which is why this list isnt formatted fully ;>

Good suggestion. It's in my database, but I haven't read it yet. I will make sure to include it on my "Active Measures/Disinformatzya" post!

It's very interesting post!!
i like your job , thank you for sharing :)

Excellent list.

Have you read Cybernetics by Norbert Weiner, anything by Richard Bandler of NLP fame, or here's a crazy one I ran across a few years ago, check out the author.
http://www.apfn.org/pdf/The_Brainwashing_Manual.pdf

I have looked at NLP (tried to study at one point, but never really grokked it on a personal level).

I have not been exposed to Weiner, but Hubbard's cult should be a testament to anything he says about brainwashing!

I found this PDF http://www.allen-riley.com/utopia/cybernetics.pdf

NLP is used heavily by Derren Brown, a British mentalist, in his many shows.

This is not NLP, but is a particularly frightening example of subliminals as used by Derren Brown. If you watch, make sure and watch the final 30 seconds.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQXe1CokWqQ

WOW! This is great. I have to show this to some people.

It's absolutely terrifying how pliable the human mind is. Derren Brown is one of the best at demonstrating this fact. He's very entertaining as he does it.

This guy is a scary or wonderful asset. Some of his video titles are wild, like Messiah is written across many of them. With his knowledge and talents I am almost afraid to watch them. Maybe i will do something more indirect like read some of the comments.

His body of work has been instrumental in my study of the psychology of deception and the con. If I saw him coming down the sidewalk, I would run.

Any time. I've reached the point where it is more difficult to hold back, than to come up with relevant additions. It's good to have something to add to. My offline life is populated entirely with people who drool on themselves, and stare uncomprehedingly when I try to converse with them.

I cut all my liberal "friends" out of my life, and I don't talk politics with liberal family members.

I put quotes around friends b/c they would wave me off to the camps in a heartbeat if CNN et al told them it was the right thing to do.

This is just the time here e have to dig in on what is right, and choose our battle for efficiency; arguing with cultists is a waste of time and energy ;>

Great stuff! I've done a lot of studying of the Nazi's use of movies for propaganda, they seem to have pioneered the media focused type. In the USSR Beria was instrumental in formulating Stalin's propaganda campaign, although his wasn't media oriented. (He was also useful for making Stalin's detractors disappear). The American propagandists (CIA) implemented Operation Mockingbird because of the success of Goebbels' media driven campaign.

excellent suggestions to add to the library.

IIRC, Hitler studied hypnotic techniques and/or oration under someone who I can't recall after he took control of the Nazi Party, but before he took State power. I may be wrong in this, but a quick search for the answer turned up these links to be added to the references:

the reading will NEVER be done; the cross-referencing and double checking will NEVER be done

Goebbels was really the propagandist, he realized the power of film. Himmler was the occultist, who added that dimension. The early German cinematographers (there are some good videos about the early German films on Y-Tube) were masters of using shadows and light to create perceptions. Murnau's Nosferatu was a splendid example. Leni Riefenstahl picked up on that tradition. Triumph of the Will shows it perfectly. She was also influenced by Lang's Die Nibelungen...the Teutonic myth.

television is so much propaganda /marketing now, not sure if people even want to be saved anymore lol

the sad thing is that most people WANT to be "saved"

they don't want to do the grueling job of information collection, double-checking, and analyis that comes with saving themselves
...and they sure as HELL don't want to do the hard tasks that saving yourself entails

most people are social animals, who want a leader to tell them what to do, and ant to revel in conformance with the crowd, which is why these techniques work so well

I try and think, but this "hurts" since I often do not have access to a lot of wide ranging facts, thus I place my own biases upon the issue in question.

But it is simple 2 me, I always consider that the LAST thing sum1 is going to try and tell me is the "truth". There are 2 many special interest groups and stakeholders now for the 'truth' to be easily and widely reported...

ELO or LEO or whatever order you prefer... stands for EMOTIONAL, LIES and OMMSIIONS... For the last years Congress stopped a democrat president doing the job he was elected to do.

Today Americans seem determined to stop the president from doing his job. This is because today politics is not about policies or whatever it is about propaganda and emotion. Thus people are 2 stupid 2 use reason and logic 2 c that stopping the government from doing its job weakens America both domestically and internationally.

This is unlikely to hurt any politicians family in any way but it will most likely have severe longer term negative impacts upon the protestors themselves.

Personally I feel serious money could be raised by the Pentagon selling "tickets" to military personnel 2 engage in a new sport called idiot bashing...

This is why America is no longer called "yankieland" ; America is now 'renamed' DADS "Dumb As Dog Ship" ! ! !

I love your posts...

/ hugz . . .

These two points you make come to the basic reason that propaganda is so successful

You are not alone in thinking hurting; it hurts for me too ;> this is why humans use thinking shortcuts (heuristics or cognitive biases); to save the time and energy thinking takes from other tasks...and because hard thinking HURTS!

The second point has always been true; I always say there is more than one bad guy in the world.
But in our world, information moves fast, and so many different people can put in their own info, or their own spin on info.

Hell, you can go back and look at all the times that CNN and others have edited things they had previously published (...down the memory hole)

With all the bullshit out there...thinking hurts more

good comment!
