The Korean Government has Officially Begun Work to Salvage the Sewol Ferry.

It’ve been nearly three years after the tragic accident, which killed more than 300 people, mostly students on a field trip. According to the Korean Ministry of Oceans, operations to raise the vessel commenced at 10:00am this morning.

The salvage operation is led by the Ministry of Oceans, with help from Shanghai Salvage, a state-run Chinese company. After about 5 hours of salvaging the ferry was lifted 1 meter (3.2feet) from the seabed. The ministry said it will float the sunken ferry 13-meters above water by 11 :00am tomorrow morning.

So basically it will take almost one day to salvage the ferry, but it took almost three years which is 1072 days to begin the process.

Until now, the Korean government delayed the salvage of the ferry with excuses such as technical issues and interruptions by the ruling party. But they finally started the salvage after the impeachment of former president Park.

Part of the ongoing tragedy is that nine bodies are still unaccounted for and are believed to be inside the ship.

Finally, Sewol ferry raised above the sea surface.

Wow, it's unbelievable that it has been over 3 years since the sinking and they're only now raising it to the surface. Coincidence that it finally happened after Park's impeachment? I suspect there's a reason the Park government neglected to salvage the ship earlier.
