The newly elected President of the European Parliament, Mr. Antonio Tajani, has caused intense reactions in Greece because he referred to FYROM (Skopje) as " Macedonia ". Also the Italian politician claimed that FYROM citizens were descendants of Alexander the Great.
These happened during a visit in the country's capital Skopje in February of 2016 in his capacity as European Commissioner. Greek European Parliament's Vice President Dimitris Papadimoulis said that Tajani had committed a historical and institutional impropriety adding that he had to publicly rectify his mistake.
In the video of Mr. Tajani's statements, released by Greek channel Ant-1 News, Mr. Tajani can be seen saying that Alexander the Great and his father Philip the Second were famous ancestors of you, addressing the crowd present. " "Macedonia" is a beautiful country. Everyone in Italy knows about "Macedonia". Why? Because Alexander the Great is a very popular ancestor of yours", Tajani said.
Greek Member of European Parliament (MEP) Maria Spyraki tweeted: "The name of the country is FYROM. Macedonia, the place where Alexander and Philip were born are in Greece. Big mistake president ". Another Greek MEP Nikos Androulakis said "Imagine that if Mr. Tajani's mother was not a professor of the ancient Greek language, what he would say ".
The EP's Office issues a statement stressing that Mr. Tajani confirmed the European Parliament's standing position that body recognised the country by its internationally accepted name of " Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia - FYROM ". Mr. Tajani tweeted in greek language: "I know very well history. Alexander the Great was Greek with ideas that contributed to the birth of Europe".
I don't know if Mr. Tajani is a friend of FYROM or not. But anyone who is a friend of FYROM means that he can counterfeit history? I think that respecting any nation's history is a characteristic of a civilized behavior.
