The star moon flag is the flag used by the Free Aceh Movement (GAM). The flag was then desired by the Aceh government to become the flag of Aceh, but rejected by Jakarta. The status is still polemic, the question of whether or not the use of the flag of Aceh has not reached the point of contact, the Polemic happened because Aceh wanted the regional flag of Serambi Mecca Province to resemble the former flag of the Free Aceh Movement. The desire has been poured in Qanun Number 3 of 2013 on the Flag and the Symbol of Aceh. But the central government disagreed.
Until now, the central government has not allowed the flag raising bearing the star moon. The reason is that there is no agreement on changes to the qanun of the flag and the symbol of Aceh between the Aceh government and the central government.

A number of former GAM Free Aceh Movement (GAM) fighters raised the flag of a half-moon star in the second floor of the house that was made the Mess Wali Nanggroe. The flag of Aceh was flown through a small ceremony approximately at 09.00 am, accompanied by the sound of the call to prayer. They then lined up and took a respectful position to the 180 x 120-centimeter flag that fluttered half the pole.
