RE: STOP THE INSANITY

in #politics7 years ago

I appreciate the sentiment, I really do, but that is so much easier said than done. There are, in fact, issues that divide us, a "culture war" as they call it, like in the 60's and 70's.

Do you support Abortion? Do you support helping refugees? Do you support involvement in the middle east? Show gay's be allowed to marry? Should firearm background checks be expanded? Should the wealthy pay more taxes? Should healthcare be universal?

So on and so forth. These are issues that legitimately divide populations in this country, and on many there is no middle ground or compromise. There is no middle ground between Gays being allowed to marry or not. They either can or they can't. There is no middle ground on whether or not a woman can get an abortion, no middle ground on whether or not transgendered folk can use the restroom of their gender identity. There is no middle ground on raising taxes on the wealth or not, expanding gun control or not. These things will either happen, and one side will be very upset, or they will not, and the other side will be upset.

I'm not entirely sure how to resolve this, how to get one side or the other to soften on their pet issues and be ok with concessions to the other side. I don't know how to make that happen, but it is certainly a complicated problem.

I agree there are many issues that we may not agree on, and there is no way one side is going to get all. We should learn to live with it, compromise, win some and lose some. It should't be the end of the world if I'm against gay marriage, and the majority wants it, I'll learn to deal with it, the same way other people have to deal with ideas and positions I support. Believe me a lot of people are coming to realize this, and eventually we will come to terms with it.
