It is strange how the more science becomes intertwined with politics, the less room there is for dissent and inquiry. Well, maybe not so strange after all, considering the nature of politics. People are quick to question any scientific study sponsored by corporate interests, and rightly so, but no one wants to consider the public choice economics of government-sponsored studies. Government is not some kind of neutral, aloof, unconcerned party, because it is composed of people with ideological interests and motivations to gain more power at least as much as any corporate board.
