I guess the Pentagon wants the Taliban to expand their opium fields, and keep the "opiate epidemic" alive! After the invasion, the US installed Hamid Karzai, who's brother was the biggest drug lord in Afghanistan, and connected to the Taliban after all.
Yup, drug money, big business for millennia.
