Office politics is always a taboo word for most of the corporate employees. It is quite pervasive at corporate workplace. Office politics is not a high end politics among the top corporate individuals, rather it's just some differences among people at work, differences in opinions, interests conflict and so on. These activities manifests in the form of office politics.

Like any other area, corporate environment is also susceptible to these kinds of activities and there's nothing to be afraid about office politics. But if you want to be a top performer in your office, the you have to master the art of Office politics for sure.

There are some ways to win this taboo thing:

Keep In Mind What You're Trying To Achieve

When some conflict happens, it's very easy to go with it's flow and keeping your focus on the immediate differences. But I think that's not at all good. You don't have to focus on the immediate differences between you and your peers. It is a self-defeating approach. You have to think in larger picture, if this conflict happens about some business idea, then analyze that idea, discuss it's pros and cons and finally if it's good for the business as a whole, then putting aside your personal interest and accepting that option is the best option for you. Finally, you should do what's good for the business, not for you.

Never Take Sides

In office environment, it's very common to find yourself squeezing between the two power figures who are basically stuck at some odds. Now, they want someone's support and both of them looking at you with the requesting eyes. Now, this is the crucial situation. If you take any one of them side, the you'll lose the support of other for possibly your lifetime. This is ironic actually. This is how office politics works. In this situation, you don't have to take any individual side, rather make them stand on a common communication platform and answer very diplomatically. By not taking any individual side, you’ll help to direct conflict resolution in a reasonable manner. You’ll also build trust with both parties.

Never Get Personal Either

In office, there comes this opportunity many times when you'll get the chance to teach a lesson to someone who always overthrows your opinion and sees you with pittance, then don't take that chance and spoil your odds of growing  your corporate life. People tend to remember moments when they were insulted and humiliated. Instead, you should make allies in your office so that you can get their mass support whenever needs come. This is the way how office politics works.

Think About Winning

As I mentioned earlier, office politics occurs because of the mindset of 'Win-Win'. We have always been taught to win from the time of our school. 'We just need to win and everyone else need to lose' - basic mind set of a common school student. But in business environment, it shouldn't be the case. Learn to think "How can we both win out of this situation". This requires understanding of other parties interest and benefits out of that situation.

If you let other party lose, then you'll lose his support forever which you can't afford. You need allies in order to grow and conflict always distorts relationship between allies. SO keep in mind this.

Thanks for reading. I am sure this articel will definitely help you to understand office politics effectively.
