House of Representatives in Texas is Moving Toward Legalizing Weed

in #politics7 years ago (edited)

The main supporters of recreational cannabis might soon be able to light up a joint legally in Texas. That's right folks, this is because the state’s House of Representatives is scheduled and is considering HB 81, which is a legislation that would literally decriminalize the usage of marijuana.

Texas is now one of several states that is considering the decriminalizing a plant which is known to have many beneficial pluses such as the possibility of the cure of cancer, seizures and manic depression.

HB 81 was first introduced by El Paso democratic representative named Joe Moody. If this bill is passed, the legislation will not only prevent the incarceration of people for possessing one ounce or less of usable marijuana but, it will also protect countless individuals from a criminal conviction and/or prison time. There is still a catch though: The authorities such as the police will still be able to siezez an individuals personal stash and issue them a ticket that can lead to a citation of at least $250.

Currently, if an individual is caught with one ounce or less of pot/weed/marijuana, they can, in the United States, be charged with a class B misdemeanor and the possibility of facing up to six months in jail.

Marijuana.com reports, “A last minute change to the bill to gain GOP support allows a judge to raise the offense to a Class C misdemeanor if the individual caught has previously been cited three times for low-level cannabis possession.” According to Moody, frequent customers can expect to be “moved into the criminal area.” It was this revision that helped the bill pass the House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee with a 4-2 bipartisan vote, however.

HB 81 will now advance to the Calendars Committee which is composed of 10 Republicans and 5 Democrats. If the Calendars Committee feels optimistic about the passing of the legislation, marijuana will be one step closer to being decriminalized in the Lone Star state.!

I knew this teenager back around 1992. He and his friends smoked weed for who knows how long. A any rate he had to have a portion of his brain removed due to the damage caused by the weed. Sad story. I hope Texas stays away from legalizing the stuff.

Well that is very very sad! :-( My guess is that it affects people in many different ways, some people it hurts, others it helps. Time will tell! Personally, I don't smoke it but I am keeping my eyes open to see how this all plays out! Than you for your comment!

While I don't use marijuana personally, I don't think it is the governments business if other people do. I can sit down and have a drink or five but the law says weed is not permissible. Time to stand up to a repressive government.

Absolutely! I completely agree with your comment. Enough is enough. They have too much control and they always want more and more. If people want to smoke, let them. Look at all the toxins they put in our food, water and cigarettes, and booze .. Its all about money, the government can ship it in an flood our streets to support their black budget projects, which in turn end up hurting the country.. sad
