Rules for thee but not for me.

How many politicians have we seen now flouting the very same Covid restrictions that they are advocating? No doubt they sincerely believe in what they are saying as a general rule, but recognize the rule is not absolute - not every single person needs to stay isolated to stop the pandemic, right?

So. . . when the choice is between the depressing option of remaining isolated/quarantined or the more exciting option of taking a little vacation, they do what comes naturally. And perhaps some of them really think it's different for them - they're smarter, more cautious, or it's been tough for them, so they deserve it.

Whatever the thought process, it shows the disconnect whereby those who make the rules frequently think it's ok to except themselves from the rules they impose on others. This is the general nature of authority, and it's why we should always doubt authority and never blithely assume they either know or care what's best for all of us.
