Awards and Settlements Appropriation

Section 415 of the Act established "an account of the Office in the Treasury on the United States for the payment of awards and settlements... under this Act," and further authorized to be appropriated "such sums as may be necessary to pay such awards and settlements." Section 415 stipulated that awards and settlements under the Act can only be paid from that account, which is to be separate from the operating expenses account of the Office of Compliance established under section 305 of the Act. The Executive Director approves all such awards and settlements.
The enacted Legislative Branch Appropriations bills of 1996 through 2017 have appropriated funds for awards and settlements under the Act.

Report: Rep. John Conyers settled a $27,000 sexual misconduct complaint in 2015

Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), the House of Representatives’ longest-serving member, settled a wrongful dismissal complaint in 2015 with a former employee who was allegedly fired for turning down his “sexual advances,” according to a report from BuzzFeed News. Conyers on Tuesday denied the allegations, and the House Ethics Committee launched an investigation.
Paul McLeod and Lissandra Villa reported on Monday evening that Conyers, the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, paid a former female staffer $27,000 after she launched a complaint against him in 2014.
