How does the world view The UK NHS service?

in #politics8 years ago

I personally am super proud/ lucky to live somewhere there is free healthcare! I count my blessings for this everyday!
It not only has helped save people very close to me but also it has given my mother (Nurse) and brother (Tissue viability specialist) an amazing and fulfilling career.

Sure we have private healthcare and it is outstanding, in fact my father was private and towards the end of his life they were amazing. The thing i feel most proud about is the fact we have a choice. We arent cast asside when things get tough or aren't financially viable. These things should be available everywhere and i hope one day the world will see the same views.

It just got me thinking... how does the world see the NHS? good or bad? exploited or a badly run system for 'public' sector people to exploit for financial gain?

Please share your thoughts here, i am truly interested :)

I also live in a country - Australia where we have a long history of providing free access to healthcare for all.
For me, the lottery of birth https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lottery_of_birth means that I believe those who do well have a responsibility to help those in less fortunate circumstances.

No one should be refused medical care because they cannot afford it.

I recently watched 'Michael Moore's - Where to Invade Next (2015)' http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/where_to_invade_next/ and it asks why can't Americans have a system of free public healthcare for those that can't afford it.

The U.S. stands almost entirely alone among developed nations that lack universal health care.

I'd be interested in hearing form US steemians about this? Why do you think the US currently does not provide free access to healthcare for all, and do you believe it's something the US could actually do if the American people want it? Do they want it?

(Apologies to OP for taking this thread on a tangent - but you got me thinking about why does the US not have free public healthcare, when nearly every other developed nation does!)

No worries about the tangent! Thats the reason i asked! I agree completely and i have no idea how the US or any country can call itself developed without free healthcare in place. Might be casting myself to the dogs by saying this but i think it is the single most important thing they need address.
