Why Brexit is Good (And the EU is Anti-European)
It's the last day of my trip to London and some people have asked me what I think about Brexit. As a passionate pro-European, of course I am all for it.
The EU has developed into a centralistic, overregulated super-state which runs contrary to everything good that Europe stands for: freedom, enlightenment, free-market economy, decentralisation of power. So the earlier we abolish it, the better.
My last visit to London was around the day of the Brexit referendum, and I used the picture above as my Facebook cover image then. When I woke up on June 24th, I could not believe that the British really voted to leave the EU. I would not have expected such a good result. So I celebrated the day with a proper English breakfast.
I like the general idea of a united Europe: there should be no trade barriers and Europeans should be able to live and work wherever they want. But open borders do not go together with the welfare state, which encourages people to live at the expense of others.
Europe became wealthy and successful because there has always been competition between its various jurisdictions. The European values of universal human rights and freedom (see chart below which explains them well) could only flourish in an environment where the power of rulers was limited and you could easily cross borders to evade it.

You can observe this especially well in the case of Germany: it developed into Europe's economic powerhouse during the 19th century, in a period when it was not a unified state, but consisted of many smaller states which competed for the best people, companies and ideas. The unification into a German Reich was a bad move, which lead to world wars and national socialism.

The Germans should follow the British example and quit the EU as soon as possible. Without two of its biggest paying member states, the EU monster would inevitably die.
This gives us the chance for a restart. We do need a Europe of free trade and easy border-crossing, but without the centralistic regulatory regime of the Brussels EU.
Let's decentralise Europe and make it truly European again!

Personally, I voted to remain in the EU but as a country, WE voted to leave and despite the protests from the 'remain' camp and voters, I wholeheartedly believe we should, as a country, leave the EU. That's how democracy works and right or wrong, we, the voters, spoke.
I like people. Countries are constructions that should rather not be liked too much. Only during football matches.
Wow great post. Didn't fully understand what brexit was until now. It like the comparison of face and its ability to change the privacy term of agreement at anytime (and it has over the years) because there is very little competition. That is essentially what the EU is and I agree, it is a huge disadvantage to all the countries. If I have learned anything from Facebook its that a centralized system with no competition is very bad and will always become corrupt by the highest bidder. Go brexit and congrats England for making a bold stance. Decentralization all the way!
I'm also considering myself as a pro-European, I'm a bit on the other side of the fence, I still have hopes for the union, and I believe that it has done more good than bad so far. I remember very well a time when one had to queue up and show passports even for internal border crossings within the western Europe. (We could already travel without passports over the Nordic borders back then, but we'd frequently be stopped in customs anyway).
Anyway, I've upvoted your post, it's very well written. Corruption (or perhaps just stupidity) are always very much present in organisations with too much power.
One very minor but still very silly thing, there are regulations that all new cars should have "driving lights" by default when starting the engine no matter if it's day or night ... for safety reasons. I think it's a good regulation, but it's very much in contrast to the taillights; according to EU regulations the taillights should by default be automatically switched off during the daylight - to save power. How silly isn't that? I guess there are lots and lots of similar stupidities in the EU regulations if one just looks a bit closer. Some of it due to corruption and/or powerful lobbyists, other things just because the politicians are plain stupid, or having weird political priorities.
Don't forget that the EU is first and foremost a peace project to ensure that the countries are entangled enough economically so that they won't start a war again.

Well Mr King, as a citizen of Brexitland, I couldn't agree more! The sooner we are clear of the undemocratic and corrupt European Union the better. The waste and corruption are on such a large scale and it is not serving the peoples of Europe, just the politicians and bureaucrats who enjoy incredible perks and pensions at the expense of ordinary hard working Europeans - it is high time that we Europeans reclaimed our hard earned freedom.

I think EU will develop very fast. i want to live in EU
