Five Eyes intelligence partners will deepen cooperation on combatting foreign interference, threatening to jointly name and shame hostile nations for coercive, deceptive and clandestine activities. In a meeting on the Gold Coast this week, ministers representing the five security allies Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Britain and the United States also called on tech companies to do more to contain harmful material on their platforms and allow law enforcement targeted access to encrypted data.

The five allies also warned the internet's "anonymous, instantaneous, and networked nature" magnified threats ranging from malicious disinformation to child pornography and extremist material. The communiqué also asserted an "urgent need for law enforcement to gain targeted access to data" subject to legal safeguards and for providers to voluntarily assist with investigations.

"Governments have a responsibility to protect those within our borders against both physical and digital threats, and to ensure that the rule of law prevails online, as it does offline"

A further statement on accessing encrypted material said individual rights must be protected but "privacy is not absolute" and encryption was being exploited by criminals. The Australian government is currently seeking to put in place laws that would compel tech giants to hand over encrypted information and assist authorities, subject to a court warrant.
