The Getty Center - Richard Meier [PL/EN]

Dziś odwiedziłam miejsce, które przypomniało mi, jak bardzo uwielbiam dobrą architekturę: The Getty w Santa Monica / Los Angeles, w Kalifornii - muzeum i konserwatorium sztuki.

Today I visited a place which reminded me how much I love good architecture: The Getty Center in Santa Monica / Los Angeles, CA - a museum and art conservatory institute.

Zafascynowany Walterem Gropiusem i Miesem van der Rohe, Richard Meier inspirował się nie tylko Bauhausem i grupą chicagowską, ale też starożytnymi Grekami, a w szczególności geometrią euklidesową. Widać to szczególnie w module kwadratu, zastosowanym w całym założeniu Getty Center w wielokrotnościach wymiaru 15 cali - 30, 60, 120...

Fascinated by Walter Gropius and Mies van der Rohe, Richard Meier was inspired not only by Bauhaus and the Chicago group but also ancient Greeks, especially - the Euclidean geometry. It's especially visible in the square module used in the Getty in the dimensions of 15", 30", 60" and 120".

The 30"x30" stone tiles show the optimal distance between people in America.

Częstym zabiegiem Meiera jest kierowanie wzroku na widok przepięknych wzgórz Santa Monica, gdzie budynki są zlokalizowane, za pomocą ram architektonicznych. Przed każdym wejściem Meier stosuje także zapraszające do wnętrza zadaszenia. Dzięki temu mimo kilku budynków i rozległych ogrodów, łatwiej było się odnaleźć w całym kompleksie.

Oftentimes Meier leads you away from his design and towards the beautiful sights of the Santa Monica Mountains through the architectural frames he created for this reason. Each entrance is accentuated by an inviting awning which is really helpful in terms of finding your way in this intricate set of buildings and gardens.

Na elewacji zastosowano 3 materiały: kamień, aluminium i szkło. Kamień o gładkiej, szlifowanej fakturze stanowił okładzinę powierzchni poziomych, a chropowaty - pionowych. Całość zaprojektowana jest w konstrukcji żelbetowej.

Three materials were used in the facades: stone, aluminum and glass. Smooth, polished stone made the surface of the flooring to facilitate walking, while rough stone - the vertical cladding. The buildings' structural material is reinforced concrete.

Zastosowany kamień to toskański trawertyn wydobywany w okolicach morza, co wiemy dzięki odciskom muszli i morskich żyjątek i roślin. Jego wiek datuje się na 8-80 tys. lat.

The stone is travertine from the seashore in Tuscany. We can tell it was located close to the water by the texture of the stone - there are countless seashell and seaweed fossils in it. The stone is approx. 8-80 thousand years old.

Warto zauważyć zabawę geometrią także w kształcie kolumn - mimo okrągłego kształtu płyty zachowują wymiary modułu.

It's well worth to take a look at the playfulness of Meier in the geometry of the columns. Despite the rounded shapes, the tiles keep their sizes.

Wnętrza również zrobiły na mnie ogromne wrażenie. Jednak na wyróżnienie zasługuje siedem poziomów ogrodów...

The interiors were also very impressive. The seven levels of gardens deserve special attention though...

...and a white tram, which takes you to the museum.

Świetna w odbiorze architektura, a co ciekawe - wstęp tam jest wolny, mimo że koszt całej inwestycji to podobno około 10 miliardów dolarów. A co w tym wszystkim najlepsze - całość wygląda na zupełnie nowe budynki, a ma już ponad 20 lat!

Fantastic architecture, and what's especially interesting is that the admission is free, despite the over 10-billion cost of the investment. What's the most extraordinary is that it looks completely new while it's over 20 years old!

Na deser podzielę się radością - zamoczyłam dziś nogi w Pacyfiku - po raz pierwszy!

Last but not least I wanna share some happiness - I dipped my feet in the Pacific Ocean for the first time in my life today!
