@for91days yes, you are right they are very thick :) and Romanesque columns are so massive on purpose as their aim is to support whole construction, however, it was until the development of the Gothic architecture with its buttress that allowed to balance a thrust created by the weight of a roof or arches that we could use thinner columns and enormous stained glass windows.
