" The man who shot and killed K-9 Officer Jethro, of the Canton Police Department in Ohio, has been sentenced to 45 years in prison.

Kelontre Barefield, 23, received the sentence after pleading guilty to charges related to the police dog's death and other charges in an unrelated robbery case, a spokeswoman for the Stark County Clerk of Courts told ABC News today. "

"A police constable in Duncannon, Pa., accidentally shot and killed a 12-year-old girl at her home following an altercation with her father over an eviction notice, officials said Tuesday.

Constable Clarke Steele fired a shot at Donald Meyer that grazed his left arm before hitting his daughter Ciara, the Guardian reported.

Steele had gone to the house to “enforce an eviction order,” officials said, following which Meyer allegedly shut the door on him before opening it a second time holding a rifle. Meyer, 57, then reportedly “leveled” his gun at Steele, prompting the policeman to draw his own weapon and fire.

Meyer was treated for relatively minor injuries at a local hospital on Monday and charged with aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person, soon after his daughter was pronounced dead at their home.

Bill Stoessler, spokesman for the Commonwealth Constables Association, of which Steele is a member, said Steele was “shattered” at Ciara’s death and had voluntarily suspended himself from the force."

"The shooting of Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old boy (June 25, 2002 – November 23, 2014), occurred on November 22, 2014, in Cleveland, Ohio. Two police officers, 26-year-old Timothy Loehmann and 46-year-old Frank Garmback, responded after receiving a police dispatch call "of a male black sitting on a swing and pointing a gun at people" in a city park.[3][4][5] A caller reported that a male was pointing "a pistol" at random people in the Cudell Recreation Center. At the beginning of the call and again in the middle he says of the pistol "it's probably fake."[6] Toward the end of the two-minute call, the caller stated "he is probably a juvenile."[7] However, this information was not relayed to Loehmann or Garmback on the initial dispatch.[8][9] The officers reported that upon their arrival, Rice reached towards a gun in his waistband. Within two seconds of arriving on the scene, Loehmann fired two shots,[10][11] hitting Rice once in the torso.[4][12] He died on the following day.[13]

Rice's gun was later found to be an Airsoft replica that lacked the orange safety feature marking it as a replica and not a true firearm.[14][15] A surveillance video of the shooting was released by police four days later, on November 26.[16] On June 3, the County Sheriff's Office released a statement in which they declared their investigation to be completed and that they had turned their findings over to the county prosecutor. Several months later, the prosecution presented evidence to a grand jury, which declined to indict.[17][18] A lawsuit brought against the city of Cleveland by Rice's family was subsequently settled for $6 million.[1]

In the aftermath of the shooting, it was reported that Loehmann, in his previous job as a police officer in the Cleveland suburb of Independence, had been deemed an emotionally unstable recruit and unfit for duty.[19] The incident received national and international coverage, in part due to the time of its occurrence, coming shortly after the police shootings of several other black males."

You shoot a Police dog, do 40 years. Police shoot you, laugh about it.

Sort:

The shootings of the 12 year olds is tragic and everything, but the point here is the ridiculousness that K-9 lives are as important as human lives... 40 years! That is insane! If one ever unjustly attacks me I'm gonna torture the fuck out of it before I off it. Earn those 40yrs lol.

Lots of laws are ridiculous, but if we agree to live in society by a set of laws, then we abide by them. If we don't like the laws we work to change them. If that is not acceptable to someone then they have no place in society

That's why I said 'unjustly.' A citizen can use physical force to resist an unlawful arrest, even deadly force. BUT, I doubt that defense would EVER work under any circumstances lol, thus I also mentioned doing 45 years.

Any honest cop will tell you to resist an unlawful arrest. Yes there are bad cops. Yes sometimes resisting an unlawful arrest goest badly. It's a civic duty to hold police accountable for abuse. It's ALSO a civic duty to not demonize them when their actions, while unfortunate, were reasonable and appropriate in the moment they were taken. He Tamir's weapon been real it would have never made the news. Had the round meant for Donald hit its mark squarely that case wouldn't have made the news either. Both hyped up because it's a chance to stir the pot.

Yeah I know I have LE family lol. I wasn't arguing that either of those shootings were intentional evil acts. I was just pointing out how crazy the K-9 laws are nuts and that people can legally resist if they ever run into one of those 'evil, racist, murderous' cops that supposedly roam the streets everywhere looking for kills.

We are in total agreement. I have a business that trains dogs for police and military and have personally bred, trained, and placed dogs with police handlers. I have a special affinity for dogs, but I can still put that aside and unbiasedly and objectively apply the law (and logic and reality) to the situation and rip apart a poor argument like the bullshit in this article

Typo: 45yrs!?

We both know he won't serve anything approaching that

Way to tug on heartstrings and but you distort the facts and miss the point...

The two 12 year olds were unfortunate accidents, not purposeful action.

So if you shoot a 12 year old on accident you wont do jail time? Because none of these cops did...

The fact that it was a 12 year old is irrelevant and just an play on emotions. If it was an accident and also not due to negligence then no, no criminal act has occurred. I'm sure civil suits will follow in both cases but that's different.

However, if you shoot a police k9, in the eyes of the law it is effectively shooting a police human. He is quite lucky to be alive to be honest

If you accidentally shoot police and also not due to negligence, it's not a criminal act.

How is shooting and killing a 12 year old when you were aiming for someone else not negligent? Especially when It's your fucking job.

Tamir had a toy gun, Cops shot him within 2 seconds of arriving. City paid 6 million for that "negligence" but killer cops are still free. You cant justify that, don't try it will make you look stupid.

Btw the settlement for money is a civil suit, not the result of a criminal trial. Learn the law you stupid ignorant fuck.

Flag this one too

Tamar rice modified his air soft pistol to appear real (removing the fluorescent tip) and pointed it at people. Tell me how much balls you have when someone points a firearm at you. You gonna take a shot just to be sure it's a real firearm?? A .45APC is just as lethal shot by a 12 year old as it is by a 40 year old

Full disclosure, I'm not a cop, never have been, never would be. Shitty job. I do have an issue with bullshit arguments and outright ignorance

Because the intended target who was grazed presented a rifle and was a clear and present mortal danger. That's why

Instead of flagging me like cowards, present an intelligent and valid counter argument.

Give it your best shot. I'll admit if I'm wrong in my analysis... IF you can convince me so

This is how adults converse...
