LOL, Time is a relative observation, based on our sun rising and setting. Time, accordingly is shorter in the winter and longer in the summer, in both hemispheres. Though we all look at the clock and judge time based on the second hand. That is reasonable, I guess, but not at all accurate. This is why our clocks do not match up to the "year". Time is the distance between now and then relative to our perspective.

As far as our orbit around the sun, it is an ellipse, the perihelion would occur close to the winter solstice. It is the closest approach to the sun on our orbit. This is on or about the first week in January. This is why the Southern Hemisphere is generally warmer than the Northern Hemisphere.

Personally I think we should judge time based on the long count, it would be far more accurate, amazing that the Mayan people knew this. Long count - would be based on the galactic movement rather than the solar movement.
