Poker & Food

When you think about poker, you may not necessarily think about food. However, countless number of home poker games involve food. I remember the times of playing a weekly 1/2 NL Holdem cash game once a week, and everyone who came would always be interested in food. Sometimes we would order out, sometimes I would bring some homemade goodies for the group, and sometimes other players would bring munchies.

Even at casinos, poker rooms usually have their own exclusive menu. You've seen it, people place the order, then the waiter/waitress brings out a table, and the person is eating a club sandwich, or Chinese fried rice, while you are waiting for AA. You know you be looking at what they are eating...and who can blame you, poker is a game of hours, and in those hours, there isn't always time to eat.

Humans love to gamble. And humans love to eat. So why not combine the two?!

Would You Eat Your Hand?

As a Lucksacks AFT segment, we will be sharing with you some simple recipes that you can whip up before your poker game. Whether you're playing at home, online, or maybe even anal enough to take your food to the casino (D.N. does it all the time), these dishes will surely bring you some happiness, even if your poker session doesn't...

Today's Starting Hand

JJ Oh yes, the ever so popular Jenna Jameson, John Juanda, fish hooks even. Call it what you want, but everybody has a love and hate relationship with pocket jacks.

The hand that looks simply beautiful when you first get it, only to become god awful by the time the river hits. I swear, nothing draws an A, K, or Q to the board like pocket jacks. It's like the other face cards are jealous, and compelled to make an appearance. I have lost so much money with pocket jacks, every time I see them now, I am tempted to fold. I don't do that however, I choose the other extreme... I all in time!!!

Today's Dish

Stuffed Mushrooms - The ever so popular fungi. Straight up fungus that grows in the ground and along trees, a fungus that may kill you, may psyche you out, or may simply satisfy your belly. Mushrooms are consumed nearly all over the world; various types, at various prices. I personally find them delicious, and extremely versatile. They can be used as a hearty side, or a substitute for meat. And if you like them enough, they can even be the center of attention. Just like they are here in my ricotta stuffed button mushrooms.

Wait, how are stuffed mushrooms and 'pocket jacks' the same thing?? Let me tell you...

  • It's all about the love and hate. Some people absolutely loath mushrooms/pocket jacks, and some people absolutely love mushrooms/pocket jacks. Simple fact of life...

Recipe

  • Butter
  • Button mushrooms, stems removed, chopped, and set aside
  • White onions
  • Jalapenos
  • Garlic
  • Ricotta cheese
  • Mayo
  • Bread crumbs
  • Egg
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 bottle of your favorite red or white wine

Preheat oven to 375 deg. F Place a dab or two of butter into a pan over med heat. Add the onions and jalapenos, cook for 5 mins, until onions are soft and opaque. Add the chopped mushroom stems, cook for 2-3 mins. Add the chopped/blended garlic, and cook for 2 more minutes. Turn off heat, and allow to cool. In a bowl, add the ricotta cheese, mayo, bread crumbs, egg, salt, pepper, and mushroom mixture. Mix. Use the cheese/mushroom mixture to stuff the mushroom caps. Sprinkle some Parmesan cheese on top of each stuff cap. Place in lasagna pan, and add about 1/2 cup of wine to the bottom of the pan; this adds a little flavor, and moisture to the shrooms. Cook the mushrooms in the oven for about 20 mins, or until golden brown and bubbly. While you wait, polish of the remaining wine...

If anyone would like precise measurements, please don't hesitate to ask.

Most of the ingredients you will need for this easy dish. My favorite dishes are the ones that take about 20 mins top to prep, and then can finish off in the oven.

A nice chop on the onions, mushrooms steams, and jalapenos.

You know it. Poker just means more interesting food.

Using organic produce in the process of healing the body is essential. Reducing toxic load in all forms is a primary aim so as to reduce the load on one's immune system allowing it to activate the body's own healing mechanism. It should go without saying but eat less processed foods and more wholesome foods! This means reading labels. The fewer ingredients the better, and if you see chemical additives, preservatives, artificial colors or flavors (usually represented by numbers) leave it on the shelf or as David Wolfe says "use it as a house brick".
