October 3, 2009 - Desert Poem

On a stretch of highway
Between here and there
With sand and shrubs
And Joshua Trees
A Bentley Brooklands rests

The driver’s door opens
With a gust of Santa Anna winds
While crocodile skin boots
Crush gravel on the asphalt
Heat filled road tar

He-whose-name-is-hidden
Through Versace sunglasses
God eyes survey the land
With a gleam of familiarity
And a tinge of irony

He walks into the Mojave
Filled with unmarked graves
From Las Vegas valets
Whose debts still fill bookey books
So that others would pay

After walking for miles
To a lost place in the badlands
Near rattlesnake filled rocks
Where outlaw cowboys played guitars
Near campfires after bank robberies

The man stops to rest on his belly arms bent
Singing a hymn to Re
Under Horus’ palace
In a language unknown
From the Book of the Dead

“I am of Pharaoh’s blood
From the cradle of the Scorpion King
The crowns of Upper and Lower Egypt
The pyramids and the Nile
From Cairo to the ports of Alexandria

“The names of the forty-two gods
Lost to escaped slaves founders of Judaism
Greek and Romans with power of the sword
The sons of Christendom
And Islam rulers of the Sahara

“I’ve traveled to India to see Swamis
Been to Tibetan mountain temples
I’ve seen Buddha on Mt. Fuji
Knelt at the Great Wall on Mongolian fields
Walked marble floors in the Czar’s palace

“Now I’ve come here to pray
In this new land of Jesus, Gangsters, and Cowboys
Creators of the Atom Bomb
Defenders of Democracy and Human Rights
Freemason symbol on a dollar bill tell me your name!”

With these words the chaparral burns
Crumbling to ashes
Then like a mythical Phoenix
Sprouts a new vibrant foliage
A cactus with peyote buttons

Wrote this poem in the Inlandia Institute writing group at the Riverside Public Library in Riverside, California. We were given prompts. As a Native American always wonder why Native American religion still struggles to find acceptance even in today’s society. Always pray that they’ll still have their day.

This poem included in my new ebook available on Amazon:

@cyemela,

Welcome to Poets United.

A fascinating idea for a poem. Unique to the nth degree. I wouldn't have thought of that theme in a million years.

I always love the introduction of history into a poem. Where we came from, explaining where we are.

Good job. I'm looking forward to seeing what else you've got up your sleeve.

Thanks bro. Enjoying this forum. Hoping to mostly promote other people and their work. Although, I'll be sharing some stuff from time to time.

Oh this was definitely a pleasant read! Incredible poem. There is huge attention to very minor details that make the scene so believable and imaginable. I will be looking forward to read more from you!
