THIS BEAUTIFUL PAIN: A POEM

The motion of her hips
Like a ship at sea,
The secret of her smile
Like the sun peeping in the sky,
The hesitancy of her feet
Like a baby daring to walk,
The warmth of her skin
Like sun baked walls in harmattan nights,
The glitter in her eyes
Like pearls pulled from the surf,
The darkness of her skin
Like the earth, the soft humus,
The softness of her breath
Like the breeze after the rains,
Are all the reasons why I stay.

Her cold, cutting words
Like old swords rusting in the sun,
Her humbling sneer
Like a mockery of laughter,
Her unyielding heart
Like a stone chained to feet,
Her broken promises
Like broken petals of roses,
The pout of her red lips,
A warning of what lies beneath,
Are all why I leave.

In a world where beauty is worshipped and priced above all else, it is quite surprising to some when they realise that a beautiful face does not encompass a beautiful soul. Everyone tend to think that because a girl is beautiful or because a guy is handsome then automatically she or he is also good and kind, caring and understanding.

I have seen beautiful people who lack manners, who are heartless, who are conniving and evil. I have seen ugly people who have the purest most loving hearts ever.

This is not to say that there are no beautiful beings who are so inside and outside but you know what I speak of.

The poem above attempts to create a picture of that contrast in humans. The poet persona speaks of a great beauty whose physical features has captured his heart but her actions, her words cause him pain and makes it difficult for him to stay. Do enjoy the read. Good morning.
