NATURE UNRESTRAINED: A POEM

As it is told,
The sun came down
And the moon rose up.
The stars glittered
And the wind moaned,
Lashing trees and little
Furry animals with dust.
The sea, yes the sea,
She rose in a swell and
The surf hit the cliffs
In a roar, churning white foam
Into bleak pictures squeezed
Off camera lenses held off
Cramped fingers, blue with cold,
Picking memories to hang
In some dark room,

In a city that never sleeps;
Yellow bulbs blinking,
Electric wires sizzling blue,
Neon light queens catcalling,
Taxi cabs crawling through
Potholes and over flooded sewers,
Rats crawling through overcrowded
Apartment buildings wailing
With TV sounds screaming with
The ra-ta-ta of bullet wounds
Poking holes in little bodies
Flung on asphalt streets filled
With wide eyed, jaundiced lips
Hungry for anything but life

As seen in the picture
On the fridge, stained with gum,
Old finger prints and dust
From the scattered kitchen,
Sink full with old dirty dishes,
Bedroom full with unbound hair,
Dishevelled beddings and
Memory of love fleeing
In the half light of the smoky
Morning, still wet with the tears
Of night, the chill of loneliness
And rolls and rolls of film
That will never tell what they saw
One time, in a far away country,
Where the earth still roamed free,
Unshackled by civilization.

MY THOUGHTS

I have never gone on a vacation in my life. I have never seen the sea with my own two eyes. I have never stood before a cliff or climbed a great height but I have seen the setting sun in its beauty. I have watched the moon draw close to the earth and I have heard the moans of the wind on rooftops as it lifts the feet of dust into the air. I have journeyed indeed.

Sometimes in a bid to live better, to have the better things that civilization has to offer we forget the great things that life has already brought to us. We strive blind to the beauty about us and we slowly become inured to beauty and slowly we wither and then we die.

I love to leave the sounds of the city once in a while. It is why I love my country. No matter how much they build, nature is never far away. Just a few metres and you are in a forest, bush, farm. It helps to watch birds, chickens, trees, flowers, live their lives. It does help, I tell you.
