Because goddesses must eat

Wan moon, rising alone from
Turgid space, hands invoke you,
Goddess of harvest & fertile
Longings. We have offer words,
Tears & spit; propitiations holy,
To your divine light, silver
In the dark. We have sought you
Like the rainbow in a puddle,
On the bead of water sliding
Down the windowpane, after
The elegy of rain. You
Were not there, in the dark
When the sky was a plain cloth
Or when it was woven with stars,
Or even when it rumbled, swollen
Fire on its face, thunder on its
Lips. Now you are here, our harvest
Have rotted, the waters have
Swept the barn from its roots
And the eaves are silent
With dead bats & leaking roofs.
But goddesses must eat, even
You who fled before the sun's
Might, who could not deny
The sea, her raging tempest,
Must eat. Here, our meagre
Portions, here our loyal
Presentations. Our babes
Have not suckled this morn,
So we must leave. Of requests,
We have none, besides that you
Leave us alone. We will hunt
Our way in this world, bereft
Of gods to worship. We will
Depend on our wiry arms, our
Puny jabs, our hunger for life
To survive all the pestilence
That this world would give.
Do not say we didn't say goodbye,
Do not say we didn't remember
Even when you had forgotten us.
