My Laughter

Have you ever been so frustrated with life that you were ready to give up and check out? The following poem was written in this kind of a situation. I had recently returned military service and was dealing with some injuries. In the meantime, my wife wanted to have a child before we got to old as we are in our early 40’s.  According to research, she had about a 5% chance of success.  She had 4 miscarriages and we were ready to give up trying to be pregnant.   

 Then one day, we found out she was pregnant again. I was worried that the mental pain of losing another one would be too much for my wife to bear. As the weeks progressed the baby kept growing inside of her. The doctors told us we had a great chance the baby would be full term. Our response to this news was pure laughter! We were in disbelief and didn't know how else to respond.    

We needed to pick a name in the event we were successful. We decided on the name “Isaac”. Isaac in Hebrew means “laughter”. Remember the Bible story of Abraham and Sara? She got pregnant and when she found out, she was filled with laughter.  The following is a poem that I wrote during this time.

                                                                     My Laughter     

                                                   Oh Laughter come and take my pain,

                                                        Without you, I may not remain.

                                                       Help make my mind whole again,

                                                           Another life is mine to gain.

                                                     I can feel your spirit but cannot hear,

                                                        Come to me now and dry my tear.

                                                 Believing’s the start of everything to come,

                                                 Dreaming with hope as your coming is near.  

                                                      I hold my breath and close my eyes,

                                                        And pray we never say goodbyes. 

                                                      I will protect you until my dying day,

                                                    When Laughters around loneliness cries.  

                                                        Feel my presence when life is done, 

                                                              My love for you will never run.

                                                         Oh Laughter come and fill my heart,

                                                    You are my life and legacy, you are my son.

PS. Isaac was born healthy and he means the world to me.
