Sirens
This poem originally appeared on Sumayyah Said So
bathing in the flashing lights
trying to name the victim
identify the crime
red trucks
black cars
silver and gold shields
pale fingers hover over the butts of their guns
when the screaming starts
the story stops
every one of us knows just how it ends
red blood
black skin
refrain on the wind
it happened again
city population minus one
bathing in the flashing lights
at the end of my driveway
praying it’s not my house
red eyes
black night
camera confiscated by a warden in blue
will you say my name?
will you say my name
when it’s my time?
