War-torn

in poetry •  7 months ago

John was polite and young

Intelligent,  funny and strong

Never did a thing wrong

But in war it went wrong

He's gone his friend said

At the grave where he laid

Pondering the last words he said

and all the promises he made

Little Emma so beautiful

Pretty, fair and hair bountiful

Now with eyes so sorrowful

Her father gone; her life less full

Sarah had a heart of gold

John's wife with beauty so bold

but as loss and grief take hold

Will she smile as days of old

Old Martha his mother

Heart broken over his father

Not willing to care for another

No zeal to live further

War a sad game of reality

Draining children of purity

Creating discord and enemity

Names of the dead lost to obscurity.
