Hold On, Let Go. - (Original Poem)steemCreated with Sketch.

He sat in the dark and the silence.
Thundering punishment down upon
himself as he was known to do.
Blows worse than the punches of a heavyweight boxer.
Bruises left lasting, invisible to the eye.
Do we heap praise on ourselves for eternity
when we do well?  No.  But, we punish and batter and berate
ourselves when we make a mistake or do not reach
the heights of Everest with every jump.

If only we held on to the positive
as we do the negative. To feed
on it and nourish our body and mind with it.
Alas, no.  We discard the positive like we
don't deserve it, like it will cause us
a rash if it touches our skin for too long.
We hang on to pain as if letting it go will
make us weaker or more susceptible
to pain that will inevitably come later.
Holding onto pain does not vaccinate one against it.

Let us hug happiness like we hug pain,
and pull away from pain like it burns
our fingers, if we linger too long against it.

Nice and very true. This is mostly due to indoctrination and programming of being unworthy. People that are positive and believe in themselves are attacked, put down, called narcissists, told they are full of themselves, etc...

Then they are told to believe in something outside of themselves, be it Science, Deity, mate or Gov.

Agreed, and also because pain is a more visceral feeling than happiness. We tend to forget happiness faster than we forget sadness because we let the pain in our lives define us.

maybe because we want to keep the info as a warning not to go true it again! fullish or not is a defence!

Good point, as we know that physical pain is the way our body lets us know that something isn't right. Emotional pain and the way it lingers could be a way for our brain to do the same thing so that we don't make similar mistakes.

Agreed @nspart. People are not used to or comfortable with people who love themselves. Imagine if everyone loved themselves!!! Oh what beauty!

The pain is often such a comfortable place for people to linger in, even when it's uncomfortable--it's familiar. Love your poem @sgtechservices. Upvoting and following you!

They are taught to love everyone else, their parents, God, Jesus, Allah, their kids, strangers but never themselves. If a person loves themselves they are called selfish.

Pain and misery actually creates a chemical addiction to those feelings also. So people actually become addicted to it.

I couldn't agree more on both points @nspart!

When I grew up being selfish was one of the worst things you could be--totally unacceptable! People are taught that everything is on the outside of themselves, love included.

I appreciate and concur with your perspective.

Great job! is an excellent poem thanks for share it ;)
