Candle

Candle

we lit the candle
and watched it burn so bright
it smelled wonderful
like some place we had not been to
and we wondered that night

the candle burned down
and the flame drown
in the wax it had melted

we sat and watched
the waves roll
onto the beach
the sun set
the surf broke like notes
ringing out for our eager ears
we sat in that magic
and listened

the tide moved the water
up the beach
and the sun dropped from the sky
the notes became noise
and the water washed
sand up into our clothes

the wind blew through the
sweet grass
the blades bent
we saw a flower alone
so pretty

we brought it to our eyes
it was marvelous like the sun
it smelled lovely like
someone we had loved

we picked the flower
to take it away with us
and keep it safe
the petals dried
and fell away
like the lives we lost
