I can still feel the heat,
Wavy lines rising off the grinder
And dancing around recruits
Whose foreheads were wet with
Wavy lines of sweat falling.

Mornings on that asphalt
We marched until we knew
That what we were before
Was simple programming
That could be altered.

As first in my company
I led from the front,
The full assault started on me
And I, in turn, guided the others,
It's why it's called boot camp.

When they've finished the programming
And we ants now know nothing more
Than the impulses and dog whistles
That make up our new software,
We are booted up on our new OS.

Our BIOS flashed,
Reality changed,
They call all this what's "real"
And what we leave on those foreign shores
The fruits of freedom.

I can still feel the heat,
Wavy lines rising off my mind
And dancing around the code,
The military software uselessly uploaded
To an already partitioned hard drive.

Mornings since those asphalt days
I walk and walk until I know
That what I was before and have been since
Is all programming
That I have altered.
