The Sad Clarinet

in #poetry8 years ago

One cold night
I opened Rumi
for a poem on loneliness.

In the other room
my father played
his clarinet.

I found a poem
called “granite and wineglass”
and read aloud.

Near the end,
somewhere, it read,
“Don’t keep complaining about loneliness!”

“Screw you, Rumi!”
I shouted, over
the sad clarinet,

and in that moment
my loneliness
vanished.
