Steemit Poetry Contest #11 - Staying true
Lonely in the crowds
my head's always in the clouds.
Still trying hard to understand
the words of my fellow men.
Just be like you.
Why can't I be the same?
Do I deserve this blue ?
Am I truly to blame ?
Would it be better to give up and bow ?
Bow to the world that made me cry ?
Bow to the people that don't understand
the pain of their fellow man ?
It seems as if being blamed or singled out for being different is such a familiar experience for people who think creatively... it's too bad. I certainly have had this experience, sometimes if only on an internal level of self-condemnation ("Why can't I be the same?"). This poem does a good job of representing the kind of internal dialogue that can take place when you feel like you come from another planet.
It's quite painful to be unique, but being "normal" is painful also, the solution is probably in the cheesy line :"Just be yourself."
This works for both sides, some people will do anything to stray away from the pack, just to be unique, this quest for differentiation can get dangerous.
agreed... and if it comes from a reactionary place, you're not really moving away from what you're reacting to anyway. Appreciate the thoughtful discussion :)
