A Pack of Cigarettes

by: Kei

As she held the cigarette between her fingertips,

she felt like she could do anything.

As she slowly sips through the stick of death,

she felt all her troubles slowly fading away.

Every smoke she exhales, gives her relief;

as if her problems are being blown away.

Gone.

Along with the cold breeze the night air gives.

She shudders.

She thought of the days when she was happy;

Reminiscing every moment,

back when she knew what she wanted,

back when everything seems to be easier..

Her vision, now clouded with every smoke she gives out.

Tears began to well up in her eyes,

she tries to fight back

"Crying makes you weak,

crying makes you vulnerable,

crying...won't help." She thought.

She lit up another stick.

Thoughts now clearer,

she started to walk.

She, then, began to realize..

It is not that she doesn't know what she wants,

It is not that things aren't going along as planned,

It is not that everything that's happening is as hard as it should be..

Everything constantly changes,

she always put other people's needs before hers.

She helps out a friend at 3 a.m. on an overdue project,

she was dead tired.

She wakes up at 4 the following day to prepare his breakfast,

she only got minutes of sleep.

She works two different jobs to make ends meet,

her boss never appreciates and takes all the credit.

It wasn't enough.

Nothing... was enough.

People judge her by her looks.

Shaved hair,

skin full of tattoos,

lips darkened by stress smoking and lipstick.

It wasn't enough.

She speaks her mind,

she gets reprimanded.

She keeps quiet,

she gets labeled.

Bitch.

Good for nothing.

Delinquent.

Slut.

Coward.

But she was brave,

brave enough to stand up for herself.

She was brave,

brave enough to follow her heart.

As she blows off smoke on her last stick of cigarette,

she found herself flying,

suddenly immersed in water;

Hardly being able to breathe,

but she was not scared.

Why?

She was already drowning when she was on land,

what difference does it make on water?

In the end, all she had was a pack of cigarettes.

P.S.
If you're ever feeling down, or just too damn tired for life. Remember, there is always that someone who wants to listen. We all know that life is a tough thing to deal with, but we also do know that a bright and beautiful rainbow comes out after a storm. Stay strong!

Thank you @georgemason and yes, you're correct on that statement. It is just sad that there are some people who carries a heavier weight and couldn't take all of it. Followed back! :)
