The woman on the train

in #poetry6 years ago

I met a woman on a train
Where cramped carriages
Came with the uncertain privilege
Of red velvet seats with stains
We swapped stories of our lives
And wondered
Why we’d done the things we had
Men talk of their achievements
Women of how they survived
I told her about you, my Roman demi-god
She thought it worth a whirl,
Though I could feel her laughter
Gently bubbling up
All men are worthless,
She said
We torment ourselves by thinking otherwise.
