I am not a Small Square Box

in #poetry7 years ago

"I am a little box that’s very square
With corners sharp and crisp that glare.
I am a little box that’s smooth and round
And as insane and wrong as this must sound
Within this box is where I’m found.
But therein am I not found at all
For around every sharp corner is a wall
And from within this cube I cannot see
Anything but what I believe to be.

"I’m curved and smooth and slick and wet
I cannot grip or grasp or clasp
I tumble and trip and slip and fall
And there is naught within to hear my helpless call.
I am a little box that’s round and square
And don’t you doubt me
Don’t you dare!
But listen, friend
Listen close yet do beware
I found a way out of my little snare…"

  • from the "Autobiography of Marcus Simon"

Marcus Simon is a character I've been working on for a novel called "The Healing Center". Marcus grew up living in group homes, and was diagnosed with Autism. He is moderately functional. His "condition" is responsible for his own brilliance, and his perspective on life actually allows those around him to appreciate life in a very different way. Marcus doesn't see his condition as an illness, he sees the modern world as the illness.
