the eternal present - a poem

my greatest wish
was never eternal life
I would trade centuries
for a visceral present
one night prowling
the deep forest
with fur and eyes
that reflect moonlight

This poem was written as a bit of a joke. I think at one point I was irritated by the amount of vampires I was seeing on TV, wondering why this was a desirable thing.

I mean, okay you get to live forever. But.... are you really yourself? You don't eat delicious food, you're constantly washing blood out of your clothes, you have questionable relationships... It seems almost like a parody of life rather than a deeply meaningful endless one. I've definitely seen way too many TV series where this is supposed to be fascinating and alluring.

I tend to gravitate more towards werewolves myself. I mean, sure there's the whole not-remembering-tearing-up-people trope. But maybe I would take that over remembering sucking people's blood in a grotesque parody of an embrace. I could learn to control it right? If vampires can feed on bunnies sometimes why can't I?

Truthfully, I think the werewolf type fulfills what I think of as a supernatural fantasy. Instead of moving away from life into death, I think it's the creature and the trope that brings you more in touch with life. It brings out instinct and a wildness that defies society. The vampire defies society but it still parodies it, never achieving something more.

Frankly, I'm rather good being human but if I had to choose...
