THE SPIRIT DRUMS (An Original Poetry ➕ Analysis & Notes 📝)

The rhythm is killing,
a sensational sway taking the body's will,
bringing a chilly smooth breeze over the plateau,
bring the elephants tusks smired in ram's blood,
the heart is thumping a cacophonous beat,
on a misty moonlight,
a foggy entrance to a dimension within supernatural
The spirit drums,
calls out to the drunken priest with ragged loin clothes,
her message is delivered in supersonic voices
the land of the unknowing is travelled,
on Carmel backs, broomsticks and candle circles,
elongated canines on wolf men feeding on flesh,
wire gauze on stinking bodies burnt in ancestral rituals.
The spirit drums,
the gods are hungry of flesh,
a cryptic enigma, a silent violence spreading in the stillness of the night
archaic humming buzzing out of the forests,
hollow, like a sinking stone in a ripples thudding,
dance to the spirit drums,
and slowly drown in shadows of darkness till the ignorance of the morn comes.
The Spirit drums,
I can hear the owl calls,
the sparrow gibbers in the depth of the skies,
echoing like an angry boomerang
men shudders in fear,
amidst voodoo chants renting the air,
the incense is inviting,
the ancient gods are coming
enveloped in mire and soot.
POETIC NOTES & ANALYSIS
The poem exhalts cryptic cultural practices and rituals it also speak about the worship of foreign gods, the offering of blood sacrifices and the uses of symbolic items like blood, incense, ancestral settings like abandoned forests, sacred ground and many others secret practices of voodoo practitioners.
The poem itself speaks about the coming of an extra-teresstrial being in a place of sacrifices. It speaks about the drum as a means of contact a means of an arrival of a god into a presence, particularly a space, a circular place with candles and triangular symbols. The poem explains the fact that this particular god seemed forgotten and belittled, as a result of this seeks retribution by demanding flesh and blood.
The poem also speaks about a channel, a forerunner of this god, a man classed in ragged loincloth and pieces of beards ancestral markings, amulets, rings and bangles as well. In other words this man is the channel to which this god speaks to the people who worships it. At the end the last stanza narrates the arrival of the god after so much appeasing and pleading.
