Mistakes

I keep wanting
To go back to my parent’s
Creaking house,
The bitter scent
Of potted geraniums,
The crab apple
Dropping blossoms
In the garden.

I see myself
Writing
At the dining room table—
I still prefer
Kitchen table talk
To what I write
In this very nice office
You made for me.

And yes, Love,
I still write
On Napkins
Or scraps of paper
Even though
You’ve given me
Lovely journals

(They scare me
With their vellum pages—
The same with
Literary journals
And publishing houses
And strangers
Knowing my name.)

I just want
To go back
To our old life—
To geraniums
And dining room tables
And driving up
The Mountain
To visit you
In your parents’ house.

You know
I hate change,
But we’ve been
Changing all along…

Still, I’m afraid,
I’m afraid
Of losing
What we’ve made
But I’d trade it all
To go back
And start all over again,
But this time
I’d do it right,
And never
Break your heart.

Thank God, his gift of eternity grants us infinite do-overs... ;)

@creatr

Amen...that's a consoling thought, my friend :)

See? You don't need a do over, you just have to hit refresh.....and who'd want to go back and do it all over again? You'd have the same old same old to repeat like Groundhog day.

Take what you've learned and walk in that truth.

How did you get so wise? I like that :)

I have magic eyes now and I know "Ben". So.....

you do...right on both counts :)

Beautiful! Hit me with over-whelming nostalgia and other emotions I didn't know i had! Please write a book @johnjgeddes! Your poems are too pure!

thank you for your encouraging response

Another beautiful poem, John. I look forward to reading them...

thank you, Ceci :)

it is inevitable to feel nostalgic from time to time, because humans by nature always believe that all past time was better, ignoring the bad and just remembering the good times

yes, nostalgia paints out the shadows

You doing awesome john . You like a indian writer jaishankar prasad .

Namste

Such a heartfelt piece. I haven't smelled geraniums in a long time, until reading that is. Beautiful, John. :)

thanks, Tina - I haven't either and just the thought of it makes me homesick

I enjoy the smell of geraniums.....they aren't bitter to me, not really. Peppery and fresh garden smell.

Saying hello Tina and thanking you for your thoughts and well wishes.

Hello there, and I hope you're doing well! For some reason, the smell of geraniums makes me think of a spring rain... :)

I am doing well, altho I probably should be going to sleep now.....

Geraniums do smell like spring rain - that's the freshness....yes!

Absolutely beautiful. Your poetry is absolutely amazing. Thank you for sharing this!
