Poetry Speaks: The Christmas Truce

in #poetry7 years ago (edited)

'Twas the eve of Christmas
Around a Belgium countryside
The year, 1914
World War 1 had brought its tide

Germans versus British
Guns and canons aimed
Everyone was skittish
Yet war will soon be shamed

As the night grew long
Gunfire began to cease
And by early dawn
'Twas silent; at peace

The British saw silhouettes
They tensed and took their aim
Germans! Unarmed!
"Merry Christmas!", they proclaimed

British men had some doubts
But soon learned to trust
They shook each other's hands
Drank booze and wiped the dust

The peace lingered on
For a day of merriment
They chanted, played, and sang
Then buried the fallen men

This precious rare phenomenon
Could have never been foreseen
'Twas the eve of Christmas
And peace reigned supreme

Speak:

I just recently read about the Christmas Truce of 1914 that happened in World War I. Some say it is a myth but according to some accounts from soldiers, it did happen. The stories told do vary since the truce did not involve the entire frontline.

This poem is for all the soldiers out there fighting a war so we can enjoy peace! Thank you for your service and may peace reign supreme! This is also for people fighting their own personal war. I hope that, even for a little while, you will find peace this Christmas season!
